BY AUSTIN OYIBODE

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the political landscape in Delta North is increasingly dominated by one name: Senator Prince Ned Nwoko. A seasoned politician, accomplished lawyer, philanthropist, and visionary leader, Nwoko has positioned himself not only as a key player in the Delta North senatorial race but as the clear frontrunner. His growing popularity, strategic political moves, and record of impactful service have made him the man to beat in the upcoming 2027 elections.

Proven Track Record of Development

Since assuming office as the Senator representing Delta North in 2023, Nwoko has demonstrated a clear commitment to tangible development. He has facilitated federal projects worth over N30 billion across the senatorial district, a feat that includes critical infrastructure, water supply, energy, and agricultural development. Notable among these are the push for the completion of the Ogwashi-Uku Dam, the drive for improved road networks including the rehabilitation of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba Road, the inclusion of Oko-Aboh-Patani road in the budget and the advancement of the Okpai Independent Power Plant.

These are not fleeting, cosmetic interventions; they are long-term, community-transforming projects. This clear focus on durable and sustainable development has resonated with constituents across Delta North, solidifying his image as a results-driven leader.

Grassroots Popularity and Accessibility

Unlike many politicians who retreat after elections, Senator Nwoko remains a constant presence among his people. He engages with his constituents regularly, whether through town hall meetings, outreach programs, or development inspections. His approachability and sincerity have made him immensely popular with youths, traditional rulers, women groups, farmers, and professionals alike.

This grassroots connection has proven invaluable, giving Nwoko a pulse on the real issues affecting communities. His approach has made governance not a distant concept, but an experience for the average person in Delta North.

Strategic Political Calculations

In 2025, Senator Nwoko made a bold and strategic move by defecting from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This realignment was not a hasty decision, but one rooted in pragmatism and a desire to leverage federal support for Delta North’s development. It also followed protracted internal crises within the PDP in Delta State, which threatened to derail his legislative agenda.

The switch to APC significantly altered the political dynamics in Delta North. It weakened the PDP’s grip on the district and strengthened the APC’s base, especially given Nwoko’s influence and popularity. This was a prelude to the massive defection of key PDP leaders and the governor, Sheriff Oborevwori. As 2027 approaches, this move is increasingly seen as prescient—one that has put him in a better position to deliver and win.

Championing Anioma Aspirations

One of the key issues that define Senator Nwoko’s political identity is his vocal advocacy for the creation of Anioma State. This long-standing aspiration among the Anioma people has found a credible champion in him. He has already introduced a bill to the Senate for the creation of Anioma State, a development that has energized his base and enhanced his standing as a true defender of Anioma interests.

In a region that has often felt politically marginalized, Nwoko’s consistent push for Anioma recognition has earned him immense loyalty. His efforts have not only revived conversations around political justice for Anioma people but also highlighted his vision beyond mere constituency representation.

Chief Emma Ejiofor a prominent APC chieftain in Delta North recently revealed that a visit to the Senate will make Anioma people proud seeing the sterling performance of their senator and the respect he earns from his colleagues.

Legislative Excellence

Senator Nwoko’s performance in the National Assembly speaks volumes. Within his first year, he was ranked among the top lawmakers in terms of number of bills sponsored and motions moved, covering issues from security and education to environmental sustainability and energy. His legislative activism underscores his commitment to governance, policy reform, and institutional strengthening.

This legislative visibility has not only enhanced his national profile but also reassured Delta North that they have a senator who is both active and effective on the floor of the Senate.

Opposition in Disarray

Another factor contributing to Nwoko’s strength heading into 2027 is the apparent disarray within the opposition. Prior to the massive defection which shook the PDP to its foundation, Nwoko’s defection had already polarised the party as many party members across the nine local government areas of Delta North were leaving in droves following his departure from the party.

Available facts had revealed that no independent or third-party candidate has demonstrated the kind of reach, track record, or campaign infrastructure that could realistically challenge Senator Nwoko. This political vacuum further reinforces his position as the man to beat in the 2027 senatorial election.

Senator Ned Nwoko’s rise in Delta North is not accidental—it is a product of visionary leadership, strategic politics, and an unrelenting commitment to service. With his blend of grassroots support, legislative credibility, and infrastructural development, he stands tall as the front-runner in the 2027 senatorial race. For Delta North, the choice is increasingly clear. Senator Ned Nwoko is not just the candidate to watch—he is the candidate to beat.
