The Federal Government has announced plans to provide 24-hour electricity to the Idu Industrial Area in Abuja through a 50-megawatt electrification initiative.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja, saying the first phase of the project is expected to deliver 10MW by December 2026, while the remaining 40MW will be rolled out through 2027.
Tegbe said the government is conducting comprehensive technical audits across major industrial corridors nationwide, with priority given to the Lagos industrial axis, the Abuja-Kaduna corridor and the Enugu-Onitsha axis.
He explained that the government intends to address infrastructure challenges along the Lagos-Sagamu corridor within six months before moving to the Abuja and Enugu-Onitsha industrial corridors.
According to the minister, effective coordination between transmission and distribution companies will be necessary to ensure reliable electricity reaches industrial end users.
Tegbe also said the Lagos industrial corridor accounts for approximately 40 percent of national electricity demand, while government interventions in the area are expected to support the creation or securing of about 180,000 jobs over the next six months.
The Minister of State for Industry, John Owan Enoh, said the government’s broader industrial strategy is focused on promoting local production, value addition, economic diversification and the integration of Nigerian industries into global markets.He added that increased local production would contribute to job creation and provide Nigerian youths with more opportunities for employment.
