Troops deploy drones, superior firepower to quell violence in Mangu community after early morning clash
Three people have been confirmed dead following a fierce clash between herders and Mwaghavul youths in Jwak Maitumbi community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State—the latest tragedy in Nigeria’s enduring farmer-herder crisis.
The victims, according to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, comprised one community member and two Fulani herders. Another villager also sustained injuries during the violent confrontation that erupted at approximately 7:35 am on August 12.
Troops Storm Scene with Drone Surveillance
Security forces reportedly responded swiftly to reports of sustained gunfire in the area, moving in to contain the escalating violence.
“Troops deployed superior firepower, forcing both sides to withdraw from the area,” Makama reported, adding that clearance operations backed by drone surveillance were subsequently conducted to confirm the area was clear of combatants.
Decades-Old Crisis Claims More Lives
The clash adds to the grim toll of Nigeria’s farmer-herder conflict, which has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions across the country—with the north-central region bearing the heaviest burden.
Following the military intervention, normalcy has reportedly been restored in the community, with troops maintaining a heavy presence to prevent further violence and deter any attempt by the parties to regroup.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
