Plateau Command Detains Trigger-Happy Cop Who Shot Driver at Checkpoint
The Plateau State Police Command has arrested and detained a police officer who shot an unarmed trader in the leg at a checkpoint in Riyom Local Government Area.
The victim, Danladi, was transporting vegetables to the Southeast in his van when he was stopped at the checkpoint on August 11. Without provocation, the officer opened fire, wounding the trader.
Command Reacts Swiftly
Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Alfred Alabo, confirmed the officer has been disarmed and is in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
“The DPO, Riyom Division, came there immediately. He got the information with his men, disarmed the officer and took him to the State CID, where he is currently undergoing questioning and a disciplinary process,” Alabo stated.
CP Orders Hospital Visit
Commissioner of Police has directed the DPO to visit the victim in hospital and report on his condition.
“The officer is with us; he is in custody at the State CID. Investigations are ongoing,” Alabo assured.
Police Appeal for Calm
The command appealed to the public to avoid confrontations with armed security personnel, urging citizens to use official complaint channels instead.
“When an officer misbehaves on the road, don’t try to attack or confront them while they are armed with a rifle. Please, make use of our numbers,” Alabo pleaded.
The command noted the officers involved were not originally from Plateau State but were on special duty under the CP’s supervision.
“Disciplinary measures are being taken already, and we want to assure the general public that this will not happen again,” Alabo added.
