Nigeria mourns the loss of a towering legal mind and devoted educator.
Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, one of Nigeria’s most distinguished legal scholars and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 92. The revered academic and former Baptist Academy student died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, August 9, 2026.
The news was confirmed by Olumide Ajomale, Global President of the Baptist Academy Old Students Association (BAOSA), in an official statement on behalf of the association’s National Executive Council.
Describing the late icon as “a towering figure in law, scholarship, and national development,” Ajomale highlighted Kasunmu’s enduring influence as a mentor, scholar, and advocate for justice.
“With gratitude to God for a life well spent in service to God and humanity, we announce the passing of our distinguished alumnus, Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, who departed peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, 9th August 2026 at the age of 92,” the statement read.
A proud member of the Baptist Academy Class of 1953 and a trustee of the alumni association, Kasunmu was celebrated for embodying the school’s core values of Integrity, Discipline, and Service. Just last year, he was honored with the BAOSA Order of Excellence Award during the institution’s 170th Founders Day celebration—an accolade bestowed upon only 170 distinguished old students.
BAOSA noted that his “legacy of wisdom, mentorship, and commitment to excellence will continue to inspire generations of Baptacads and Nigerians at large,” adding that the association finds comfort in the profound impact he made through his dedication to law, education, and humanity.
The association has called on old students worldwide to keep the Kasunmu family in their prayers during this time of grief. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
