Ogun cops uncover arsenal, bust cult hideout, arrest 23 foreign scammers in week of major operations
The Ogun State Police Command has recovered an English submachine gun and 75 rounds of live ammunition concealed inside a damaged wardrobe in Sagamu Local Government Area—a discovery made while clearing a rented apartment previously occupied by a deceased landlord.
According to DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, operatives attached to Sakura Division swiftly secured the location after receiving the report on August 5, 2026, at approximately 1:00 PM.
“The recovered exhibits have been secured and will undergo ballistic examination by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta,” Babaseyi stated, adding that investigations are ongoing to determine how the weapons ended up hidden at the location.
CULT BUST NETS 12 SUSPECTS
In a separate operation, Idi Oke Division officers foiled a cult gathering in Igbesa, arresting 12 suspects who were allegedly harassing and extorting patrons at Harodous Hotel, Lattykay.
Recovered items include:
· Assorted charms and cult paraphernalia
· Battle axes and knives
· Eight motorcycles
· One black Lexus vehicle
· One unregistered red Toyota Camry
The operation, conducted on August 3 at approximately 5:00 PM, was based on credible intelligence. Several suspects managed to flee, but police say efforts to apprehend them are ongoing.
ARMED ROBBER BUSTED AFTER DISTRESS CALL
Meanwhile, Itele Division arrested suspected armed robber Babatunde Olasunkanmi following a distress call from a commercial motorcyclist who reported that two passengers attempted to rob him at gunpoint along Orji Block Area.
Olasunkanmi allegedly pointed a locally fabricated double-barrel pistol at the victim while his accomplice escaped with the victim’s red Bajaj motorcycle. Recovered items included the homemade pistol, criminal charms, a Tecno Android phone, and a UBA ATM card.
23 FOREIGN NATIONALS HELD IN VISA SCAM CRACKDOWN
In a major breakthrough, Atan-Ota Division arrested 23 foreign nationals on August 4 in connection with an alleged Ponzi scheme, visa fraud, and other immigration offenses at a gated estate off Iyana Iyesi, Onipanu-Ota.
One Malian international passport bearing the name Diakite Alfousseini was recovered. Twenty-one suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service on August 5, while two others remain in police custody for possible prosecution over obtaining by false pretence.
COMMISSIONER VOWS CONTINUED CRACKDOWN
Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to proactive policing, intelligence-led operations, and sustained inter-agency collaboration to disrupt criminal activities and bring perpetrators to justice.
“We urge residents to remain calm, vigilant, and continue providing timely and credible information through established channels,” Ojajuni said.
