Cross River Governor tours devastated communities, promises: “We WILL prevent this from happening again!”
At least five persons – including four children from ONE family and a tanker driver have died after devastating floods and landslides swept through Calabar, leaving communities submerged and families shattered.
The Tragedy:
· 4 children from the family of Mr & Mrs Kingsley Edu – all dead
· 1 tanker driver, identified as Mr Udo – killed
· Communities hit: Ikot Awatim, Ikot Ansa, Calabar South, Mbukpa, Big Qua Town, Ibom Layout, 8 Miles
Governor Otu’s Emotional Response:
After touring the worst-hit areas on Sunday, a visibly shaken Otu said:
“My heart is deeply burdened by the magnitude of this devastation. No words can truly compensate for the precious lives we have lost.”
His Pledge to Residents:
. Decisive, proactive measures to reduce disaster risks
. Stronger flood mitigation & emergency response systems
. Improved drainage infrastructure
. Better environmental management for long-term solutions
“While we cannot undo the pain of this moment, we can, and we WILL, do everything within our power to prevent a recurrence.”
Message to Victims:
“You are NOT alone. Your government stands with you. Together, we will overcome.”
Otu urged residents not to lose hope, promising continued support to rebuild lives and restore normalcy.
