Works Minister David Umahi has brushed aside Peter Obi’s claims of death threats, insisting the Labour Party stalwart is in no danger and will be very much alive to taste defeat once more in the 2027 presidential race.
Speaking Friday during an inspection of federal road projects in Ebonyi State, Umahi dismissed Obi’s concerns as frustration, not fact.
“Nobody wants Obi dead; it’s not even reasonable,” Umahi said. “We all want him alive to contest this election and watch himself lose again.”
Obi had earlier alleged that his outspoken criticism of the federal government had triggered threats against his life, raising alarm over Nigeria’s political climate.
But Umahi turned the tables, suggesting Obi’s real fear isn’t death but political irrelevance. He argued that Obi’s reliance on the South-East as his 2023 stronghold is now shaky, thanks to President Bola Tinubu’s infrastructure push and appointments in the region.
“What he is afraid of is because he said South-East is his catchment area which I call an accident of history,” Umahi said. “We have come with visible development, and our people now agree we are better off with Tinubu than playing Artificial Intelligence-style politics.”
The minister also threw down the gauntlet, declaring he’s ready to debate Obi head-to-head on the Tinubu administration’s record.
