A disturbing incident in southeastern Nigeria has sparked widespread concern after a father allegedly threw his two young children from the third floor of a residential building before jumping from the same height.
The incident occurred in the Umuobe community near Aba Main Town in Abia State on the evening of Thursday, July 30, 2026, leaving residents shocked and raising fresh concerns about family safety and mental health.
According to eyewitnesses, the man, believed to be about 40 years old, allegedly threatened his wife before carrying out the act. Moments later, he reportedly threw both children from the top floor of the three-storey building before jumping himself.
Neighbours said they were alerted by the desperate cries of the children and immediately rushed to the scene. Residents quickly rescued the injured children and transported them to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Despite falling from such a height, both children survived the incident. Medical officials have not publicly disclosed the extent of their injuries, but witnesses described them as suffering varying degrees of trauma. Their survival has been described by many residents as remarkable.
The father also survived after jumping from the building. Police officers who responded to the emergency took him into custody before transferring him to a different hospital for medical attention under police watch.
The shocking incident drew a large crowd as residents struggled to understand what could have led to such a tragedy. While some people in the community suggested the man may have been under the influence of illicit drugs, others speculated about possible mental or spiritual factors. However, no official explanation has been confirmed by investigators.
The Abia State Police Command has confirmed that a full investigation is underway.
Police spokesperson DSP Maureen Chinaka said officers received a distress report at about 6:00 p.m. on Thursday and immediately dispatched a team to the scene.
According to the police, the children were taken to one hospital for treatment, while their father was admitted to another medical facility. Authorities said investigators are gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses to establish the circumstances that led to the incident.
The case has generated strong reactions across Nigeria, with many people expressing relief that the children survived while calling for a thorough investigation and appropriate support for the victims.
Child protection advocates have also renewed calls for greater awareness of domestic crises, mental health challenges and early intervention in families showing signs of distress. Experts say communities should promptly report threats or violent behaviour to authorities before situations escalate into tragedy.
Police have urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while investigations continue. Officials say further updates will be provided once investigators establish the motive behind the incident and conclude preliminary findings. For now, the two children remain under medical care, while their father remains in police custody as authorities work to uncover what led to one of the most disturbing family incidents reported in Aba this year.
