The gale of defections rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State continues to deal a devastating blow to the party’s numerical strength as the 2027 general elections approach.
The latest defection comes from Dr. Chris Okobah, a foundation member, political heavyweight, and renowned grassroots mobilizer from Onicha-Ugbo, Aniocha North Local Government Area, Delta State. Dr. Okobah, along with over one thousand supporters, made the decision to leave the PDP at the weekend.
Dr. Okobah explained that his decision to quit the PDP was not taken lightly, given his long-standing commitment and significant contributions to the party’s success since its inception. In a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of Ward 2, Onicha-Ugbo, Mr. Chukwuka Nwokolo, Dr. Okobah cited “unfathomable disaffection and internal squabbles” within the party as the primary reasons for his departure.
He further stated, “The current state of affairs within the PDP no longer aligns with my political principles, nor does it provide a conducive platform for leadership and development. As a result, I, along with over one thousand of my supporters, have decided to quit the party.”
Dr. Okobah acknowledged the valuable relationships he had built within the PDP and the experiences gained over the years. He reaffirmed his commitment to the progress and development of Onicha-Ugbo and expressed his willingness to serve in any future capacity that would contribute to the welfare of his people.
Throughout his political career, Dr. Okobah has held several esteemed positions within the PDP at the national level, including Chairman of the House of Assembly Appeal Panel, Chairman of the Senate Appeal Panel, Secretary of the House Appeal Panel, and a member of the PDP Presidential Election Committee.
Political analysts have noted with regret that Dr. Okobah’s resignation marks a significant setback and turning point for the PDP in Delta State, further weakening its position ahead of the 2027 elections
