Kwankwaso Drops Bombshell : Peter Obi Signed ‘One-Term’ Deal For 2027 Presidency

NDC Vice-Presidential candidate reveals written agreement limiting Obi to single term, with power returning to North in 2031

In a dramatic revelation that could reshape Nigeria’s 2027 political landscape, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has disclosed that Peter Obi signed a formal agreement committing to serve only one term if elected president.

The Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) made the stunning disclosure Monday during an appearance on Channels’ Politics Today, confirming what has long been speculated about the opposition alliance’s power-sharing arrangement.

The Written Pact

Kwankwaso revealed that the one-term commitment wasn’t merely a verbal promise but a documented agreement forming the foundation of their pre-election alliance.

“I personally believe him. Based on what I now know about him, I don’t think he will renege. I don’t think he will change his mind when the time comes. We are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to put it on paper,” Kwankwaso stated emphatically.

The former Kano State governor outlined the timeline clearly: “We will work together as a group, as a party, as friends, brothers and so on… so that after our term of four years in 2031, then it (presidency) comes back to the north. That is the general agreement.”

From Skeptic to Believer

Kwankwaso acknowledged that his perception of Obi has transformed dramatically since the 2023 elections, now viewing the former Anambra governor as a trustworthy partner.

“I now know that Peter is a very serious politician; he has this country in mind. He is someone to be relied on,” Kwankwaso said.

He further explained that comparing their policy blueprints revealed striking similarities in vision and mission for Nigeria, making their partnership seamless.

Obi’s Consistent Stance

The agreement aligns with Obi’s repeated public declarations that he would serve only one term if elected in 2027. The former Labour Party presidential candidate has consistently argued that a single term would:

· Allow power to rotate back to the North in 2031
· Promote national unity and fairness
· Ensure political stability
· Demonstrate commitment to zoning principles over personal ambition

What This Means for 2027

This revelation solidifies the NDC’s power-sharing framework and raises questions about:

· The durability of the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance
· Potential challenges to the agreement
· The North-South power rotation debate

With both politicians now publicly committed to this arrangement, the 2027 election is shaping up to be a referendum on their collective vision for Nigeria’s future.
