The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has launched an enforcement operation that led to the closure of several shops and commercial plazas along the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba corridor over alleged violations of the state’s waste management regulations.
The action followed the expiration of compliance notices previously issued to affected business owners. According to LAWMA, the exercise was carried out by its Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team after inspections found that some businesses had failed to adopt approved waste disposal practices.
LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the operation reflects the agency’s determination to strengthen environmental law enforcement and maintain cleaner communities across Lagos. He explained that the affected premises continued to dispose of waste improperly despite receiving official warnings.
He stressed that environmental protection requires cooperation from residents and business operators, adding that public health and a cleaner environment remain top priorities for the state government.
The agency urged traders, property owners and residents to comply with approved waste disposal guidelines, warning that enforcement actions will continue against individuals and businesses that violate environmental sanitation laws.
The latest operation is part of Lagos State’s broader campaign to reduce indiscriminate waste disposal, improve urban cleanliness and promote sustainable environmental practices across Africa’s largest city.
