Land Your Dream Government Job: 7 Critical Mistakes That Could Sink Your Application

The Federal Government, through the Federal Character Commission (FCC), has issued a crucial warning to job seekers: avoid these seven common pitfalls that could automatically disqualify you from federal employment.

With thousands of Nigerians vying for positions in ministries, agencies, and departments, the competition is fierce. However, the FCC reveals that many applicants are sabotaging their own chances with simple, preventable errors. More critically, the commission is sounding the alarm on a surge of recruitment scams preying on desperate job hunters.

To protect your personal information, your money, and your future, steer clear of these deal-breakers:

1. Trusting Unofficial Sources
The FCC warns that social media is a breeding ground for fake vacancies. Fraudsters create phony websites and links to steal your data or extort fees. Always verify announcements exclusively through the FCC’s official recruitment portal.

2. Paying a Dime for a Job
Any individual demanding payment for a government appointment is a fraudster. Federal recruitment is free and transparent. If someone promises you a job for cash, report them immediately.

3. Skimming Over the Fine Print
Failing to read the eligibility criteria is a surefire way to be rejected. Qualifications, age limits, experience, and certifications are non-negotiable. Ensure you tick every box before you apply.

4. Submitting at the 11th Hour
Technical glitches are real. Submitting on the closing day is a gamble that often ends in disappointment. Apply early to give yourself a buffer for corrections.

5. Careless Application Errors
Spelling mistakes in your name, inaccurate qualifications, or missing documents can derail your application during the verification stage. Double-check every detail.

6. Stopping at the Submission
Getting an application in is just the starting line. Be ready for aptitude tests, interviews, and screening exercises. Prepare for the entire marathon, not just the first mile.

7. Falling for “Guaranteed” Jobs
If an advertisement promises guaranteed employment or feels overly urgent, it is almost certainly a scam. Legitimate recruitment is structured, transparent, and follows official channels.

The FCC urges all applicants to be vigilant, prepared, and to trust only verified government platforms. Your dream job is attainable—but only if you play by the official rules.
