France have ended Africa’s final hope of lifting the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Morocco 2-0 in a captivating quarter-final clash, with Kylian Mbappe once again delivering a match-winning performance.
The Real Madrid forward recovered from an early disappointment after seeing his first-half penalty saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Rather than allowing the miss to affect him, Mbappe responded with a moment of brilliance in the second half, curling a superb strike into the net to give France the breakthrough.
The goal was Mbappe’s eighth of the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot and further strengthening his reputation as one of football’s greatest big-game performers.
France doubled their advantage just minutes later when Mbappe released Ousmane Dembele with a perfectly weighted pass. The Ballon d’Or winner kept his composure and slotted past Bounou to seal victory and send Les Bleus into another FIFA World Cup semi-final.
Morocco, the last African nation left in the competition, fought with determination and enjoyed passionate support from thousands of fans inside the stadium. However, the Atlas Lions struggled to break down France’s disciplined defence, with the absence of injured midfielder Ismael Saibari limiting their attacking threat.
The victory keeps France on course for a third consecutive World Cup final after lifting the trophy in 2018 and finishing runners-up in 2022. Didier Deschamps’ side will now face either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals as they continue their pursuit of another world title.
For Mbappe, the performance was another reminder of his remarkable World Cup legacy. The French captain has now scored 20 goals in 20 World Cup appearances, leaving him just one goal behind Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record.
Although Morocco’s campaign ends in disappointment, the Atlas Lions leave the tournament with pride after another impressive World Cup run. With a young and talented squad, they are expected to remain one of Africa’s strongest contenders as they prepare to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
