Naira Holds Steady at ₦1,362/$ as Black Market Premium Shrinks to ₦62

The naira demonstrated remarkable resilience on Thursday, August 6, 2026, holding its ground against the US dollar in Nigeria’s official foreign exchange market, even as a noticeable yet narrowing—gap persists between regulated and informal trading channels.

According to the latest data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) quoted the naira at ₦1,362.55 per dollar on Thursday—a marginal improvement from the ₦1,364.83 recorded earlier in the week. This marks the fourth consecutive session that the currency has traded comfortably within the ₦1,360 band, signaling a period of unexpected calm in the official window.

However, the parallel market tells a slightly different story. Street traders and bureau de change operators priced the dollar at approximately ₦1,424 on the selling side, widening the official-to-parallel spread to about ₦62 per dollar. This premium, while significant, has been gradually compressing in recent weeks—a development analysts attribute to targeted central bank interventions and improved dollar supply.

Why the Gap Persists

Market observers note that the stability in the NFEM reflects a combination of factors:

· Enhanced liquidity in the official window, driven by periodic CBN dollar injections.
· Sustained monetary policy tightening, which has dampened speculative demand.
· Improved remittance flows and increased participation from foreign portfolio investors.

Conversely, the parallel market remains under pressure from retail demand—importers seeking urgent FX, business travelers, and households covering overseas school fees and medical expenses. These users, often unable to access the official channel quickly, continue to pay a premium for convenience and speed.

What This Means for You

For Nigerian businesses and individuals, the applicable exchange rate depends entirely on the transaction channel:

· Banks and authorised dealers transact at the official NFEM rate of ₦1,362.55.
· Bureau de Change operators and street traders reflect the parallel market rate, which hovers around ₦1,424.

The CBN has reiterated that the NFEM rate—computed as a volume-weighted average of all official transactions—remains the sole benchmark for regulated FX dealings in the country. The apex bank is widely expected to maintain its intervention strategy to anchor inflationary expectations and support domestic manufacturing.
