In a dramatic political realignment that has sent ripples across Nigeria’s opposition landscape, the factional national chairman of the Accord Party, Christopher Imumolen, has officially withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race and declared his full support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Imumolen announced his decision in a statement released on Sunday, revealing that the move followed extensive consultations with the party’s leadership. He framed the withdrawal not as a defeat, but as a patriotic sacrifice—putting national unity and stability above personal ambition.
“The unity, stability, and continued progress of Nigeria must take precedence over personal political ambition,” Imumolen declared.
10 Reasons Behind the Withdrawal
The Accord Party chieftain outlined a comprehensive 10-point justification for his decision, citing a convergence of vision with the President on key national priorities, including:
· Economic reforms and fiscal discipline
· Education sector transformation
· Youth empowerment and job creation
· Industrialization and local production
· National development and infrastructure
He also praised Tinubu’s “leadership capacity, political sagacity, commitment to progressive governance,” and his ability to identify and nurture talent—qualities Imumolen said convinced him that the President’s reform agenda offers the best path forward for Nigeria.
‘Nigeria Above Self’
Despite prevailing economic headwinds, Imumolen expressed confidence that Tinubu’s policies and fiscal reforms would ultimately reposition the country for sustainable growth. He stressed that continuity in governance and policy consistency were critical to strengthening institutions, attracting foreign investment, creating jobs, and sustaining long-term development.
“My aspiration has always been to serve Nigeria and not merely to occupy public office,” Imumolen said.
“Whenever the national interest is better served through unity and strategic collaboration, I will always choose Nigeria above personal political ambition.”
Call to Action
In a direct appeal to his supporters, party members, professionals, and Nigerians at large, Imumolen urged them to rally behind President Tinubu in the 2027 election.
“Our decision to withdraw our presidential candidature and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a deliberate sacrifice made in the interest of Nigeria,” he added.
The development marks a significant boost for the Tinubu campaign, as it signals growing cross-party alignment ahead of the 2027 polls—and a potential fracture within opposition ranks seeking to unseat the incumbent.
