Ekiti State NDLEA Commander, Rufus Aina, made the revelation during the 2026 World Drug Day commemoration in Ado Ekiti on Thursday.
Commander Aina noted that the drug problem in the state is fueled by large-scale cannabis cultivation in several local government areas, posing a major threat to security and societal well-being. Key achievements in the past year include:
· Massive Raids: Over 51 hectares of cannabis plantations destroyed.
· Seizure: More than 127 tonnes of cannabis recovered.
· Arrests: 281 suspects apprehended.
· Convictions: 50 have been jailed, with others still in court.
· Substances Recovered: 6,337.517 kg of various illicit drugs.
The commander highlighted the arrest of two octogenarians 78-year-old Ogunjobi Samuel and 80-year-old Oke Samuel for drug dealings, alongside a 20-year jail term secured for trafficker Osho Akindele.
Aina stressed that new threats like synthetic drugs and online trafficking require innovative responses beyond enforcement, calling for collective action from parents, teachers, and community leaders.
He praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji and his wife, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, for their support in advocacy and sensitization efforts.
