A former chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Aniocha North local government area of Delta state, Chief Jerry Nkeweshe, the Owelle of Onicha-Olona on Thursday dumped the PDP and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Chief Nkeweshe defected with his numerous supporters in Onicha Olona, the community which produced the only APC councilor in the just concluded local government elections in the state. He is the only APC councilor out of the 500 in the state

He and his followers with his wife, Mrs. Maryjane Nkeweshe were received by the APC revalidation and registration committee led by the former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Surveyor Abiodun Aluko.

Other members of the APC committee that received Nkeweshe into APC included Abubakar Malam, secretary, Musa Shu’aibu Guri, member, Ambassador Moses Kyari, Barr. Emenitu Uzor and Hon. Nwoba Onyekachi.

Surveyor Aluko told journalists that they were in Onicha-Olona to carry out the revalidation and registration of APC members, an exercise they had done in the state for the past one month.

He said coincidentally Nkeweshe was defecting and that they came on behalf of the National Working Committee of the party to receive him into the party and register him, his wife as well as their supporters as APC members.

He said their presence was to ensure that APC moved faster and better in Delta State towards taking over the reins of government in 2023.

On his part, Chief Nkeweshe told journalists that the decision to decamp to APC was a collective one taken by him and his supporters.

He gave his reasons for dumping the PDP: “For over 16 years that I have been in PDP I have benefitted nothing from the party. Yet, I have been spending my money to maintain and keep the party wheels running.

“I never planned to join APC, but I received a call one day from His Excellency, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who said that he wanted someone like me to join the APC.

“I spoke to my supporters and consulted them about it, and we all agreed to go and join the APC. His Excellency, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege who has a vision for Delta state believes that I have what it takes to help him achieve his vision for Delta state come 2023.”

Also on hand to receive Chief Nkeweshe and his wife, Mrs. Mary Jane Nkeweshe to the APC was Chief Omeni Sobotie, an aide to the Deputy Senate President, and one time political adviser to former Delta State governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori.

Highlight of the defection was the presentation of a Lexus 300 jeep, a Toyota Corolla car and two brand new motor cycles to some supporters by Chief Nkeweshe, who promised to help build the APC in his Ward 4 Onicha-Olona.

Also at the event were APC chieftains in Delta State, including Mr. Gideon Nwomu, Ogbueshi Adizue Eluaka, from Oshimili South; Chief George Okafor, Senatorial chairman of APC, Barr. Joe Asem, APC leader from Aniocha South; Mr. Matthew Chinye, APC leader from Aniocha North and Mr. Emmanuel Owezim, the only APC councilor in the state and representing Ward 4.

His wife expressed happiness over the reception given to her husband by the party stalwarts. She said she would support her husband with all her strength and talents to move the party forwa d in the area.
