Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has cast his vote in the ongoing governorship election in Anambra State.
Obi voted at Polling Unit 019, Umudim Akasi, Agulu Ward 2, in Anaocha Local Government Area, at exactly 11:46 a.m.
Speaking with journalists shortly after voting, Obi expressed concern over what he described as the continuous deterioration of Nigeria’s democratic process.
“Our democracy is deteriorating, and unfortunately, those who benefit from bad governance are the ones fueling it,” he lamented.
Obi decried the persistence of vote buying in Nigerian elections, describing it as a major threat to the nation’s future.
“I have moved around and observed what is happening, and it is disheartening that vote buying still takes place. When an unemployed person sells their vote for ₦30,000, it means they have sold their school, hospital, job opportunities, and ultimately their future. That is what is very worrisome about our democracy,” he said.
He added that other African nations, including some within West Africa, have made better progress in electoral conduct.
“In other countries within our region where I’ve observed elections, I haven’t seen this level of vote buying. It must stop,” he stressed.
Obi clarified that although he was not on the ballot, he remains a committed member of the Labour Party and fully supports the party’s candidate, Dr. George Moghalu.
“All the candidates contesting are my friends, and I wish them well,” he added.
