The ‘Road Warrior’ Turns 63: Tinubu Hails a Nigerian minister— A Minister Who Refuses to Sit Still

Forget the typical desk-bound politician. Nigeria’s Works Minister, David Umahi, is the man who literally sleeps on the asphalt to get the job done—and today, the President is singing his praises.

On his 63rd birthday, President Bola Tinubu has rolled out the red carpet for the former Ebonyi governor, calling him not just a minister, but “one of my outstanding, hardworking ministers.”

But this isn’t just a routine birthday greeting. In a statement that reads more like a commendation for valor, Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, revealed why the President is so impressed: Umahi is obsessed with building roads that will outlast all of us—durable infrastructure designed to last “about a century.”

The Minister Who Works From the Tarmac
What sets Umahi apart? According to the President, he isn’t the type to clock in and out of a fancy office in Abuja. Instead, he’s a battlefield commander of construction, personally storming project sites across the nation to ensure contractors aren’t cutting corners. Tinubu noted that Umahi is “constantly on the road, personally monitoring construction work nationwide to ensure compliance with specifications.”

In an era where many leaders are accused of being detached, Tinubu is celebrating the “passion, dedication, and deep patriotism” of a minister who leads from the front—often literally on the frontlines of heavy machinery and asphalt.

A Mission to Accelerate
The President has also used this moment to fire a new charge at the birthday boy: accelerate. With Nigeria’s economy crying out for activity, Tinubu urged Umahi to push the pedal down on road rehabilitation and delivery, framing it as a direct strategy to boost economic activity and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.

From Ebonyi to the Federal Stage
Umahi’s journey is a political masterclass. From serving as a two-term Governor of Ebonyi State (2015–2023) to representing Ebonyi South in the Senate, he has now found his ultimate calling in the Federal Cabinet—repairing the nation’s arteries.

As the Minister celebrates his big day, the President extended warm wishes to his family and prayed for “good health and renewed strength” to continue his service.

If the roads are the body of the nation, Tinubu is betting that Umahi is the surgeon who won’t stop until the job is done.
