Trump returns to White House dinner under heavy security after alleged assassination attempt

US President Donald Trump is set to return to the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Friday under unprecedented security, three months after an alleged assassination attempt forced the cancellation of the original event.
The annual gathering, which brings together journalists, government officials and public figures, was thrown into chaos in April when gunfire erupted outside the Washington Hilton as Trump arrived.

Secret Service agents quickly evacuated the president, while law enforcement arrested a suspect identified as 31-year-old California resident Cole Allen, who has pleaded not guilty to charges that include attempting to assassinate the president.

This year’s event has been moved from the Washington Hilton to the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C., with attendance significantly reduced. Security has been tightened with expanded protective measures, road closures and a larger security perimeter designed to prevent a repeat of the April incident.

Trump is expected to deliver the remarks he was unable to give when the original dinner was abruptly cancelled. While he has often criticised major US media organisations, White House officials say the president is looking forward to participating in the event, which also marks the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration expects the evening to celebrate both America’s history and the role of a free press.
The White House Correspondents’ Association, which organises the dinner, has described the rescheduled gathering as a symbol of resilience against political violence. Association president Weijia Jiang said the organisation refused to allow the April attack to overshadow one of Washington’s most recognised journalism events.

Although Trump briefly praised journalists after the April incident, he has since hinted that his speech could include criticism of sections of the media, maintaining the combative relationship that has characterised much of his political career.

The programme will also honour a Secret Service agent injured while responding to the April attack, alongside staff members who assisted during the emergency. Mentalist Oz Pearlman is expected to perform as part of the evening’s entertainment.

Secret Service Director Sean Curran said preparations for the event reflect the elevated threat environment facing senior US officials, describing current security risks as among the highest he has encountered during his career. He maintained that the agency’s response during the April incident prevented the attacker from reaching the main event hall.

The rescheduled dinner is expected to proceed under one of the most extensive security operations ever organised for the annual gathering, underscoring growing concerns over political violence in the United States.
