Suspected bandits have abducted an unspecified number of students from Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred on Monday morning while students were sitting for the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
According to residents, the gunmen stormed the community in large numbers, firing indiscriminately and creating panic. During the attack, one teacher was killed, while another sustained injuries.
Residents alleged that military personnel stationed in the area had departed for a patrol to nearby Uba, about 16 kilometres away, shortly before the assailants struck.
“The soldiers were not around when the terrorists invaded. They came in large numbers, firing sporadically and causing panic everywhere.
“They took away students writing NECO and their teachers,” a resident told journalists.
The spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident, stating that several students remain unaccounted for following the raid.
Security agencies have yet to disclose the exact number of those abducted or provide further details on rescue efforts.
