The Mayor of Urhoboland and former militant leader, Eshanekpe Israel, popularly known as Akpodoro, has extended warm congratulations to Delta State Governor, Elder (Rt. Hon.) Sheriff Oborevwori, on his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He described the move as a bold and wise step, praising the Governor as a widely accepted leader who transcends party lines.
In a congratulatory message issued shortly after Governor Oborevwori officially announced his defection at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday, Akpodoro said the Governor’s switch to the APC had instantly reshaped the political landscape of the oil-rich state.
According to Akpodoro, the Governor’s track record in infrastructure development and governance guarantees him a second term, and his presence in the APC cements his status as the party’s new leader in Delta State. He added that anyone uncomfortable with the party’s transformation is free to leave.
He praised the collective move of PDP members in the state to join the APC, calling it a refreshing shift toward progressive politics and a rejection of personality-driven leadership. Akpodoro also acknowledged former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, referring to him as a seasoned political mentor and the foundational pillar behind the current administration.
Revealing that he foresaw the defection long ago, Akpodoro credited the APC state executives, led by Elder Omeni Sobotie, for building an appealing platform that attracted the new wave of supporters. He also lauded APC National Chairman Alhaji Umar Ganduje and the national working committee for their commitment to maintaining the party’s strength and credibility over the years.
However, Akpodoro didn’t mince words in warning Governor Oborevwori to avoid aligning with what he called “toxic and treacherous” politicians. He specifically named Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, accusing him of undermining the party’s unity and betraying key figures like Olorogun O’tega Emerhor and Chief Great Ogboru.
“The Governor’s defection has sent shockwaves through the camp of those who once monopolized the APC ticket,” Akpodoro said. “We remember how Omo-Agege created deep divisions in the party by betraying his fellow leaders. That era is over. It’s time for a fresh start.”
He expressed confidence that Deltans would renew Governor Oborevwori’s mandate in 2027 and declared the current wave of defections from the PDP nationwide as proof of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s effective leadership. He described the APC as the party of hope, and predicted a landslide victory for Tinubu in the next general election—regardless of any alliances among “failed politicians.”
“The fall of the PDP has begun, starting from Delta State,” Akpodoro stated. “What we are witnessing is a political realignment driven by performance, vision, and the people’s trust.”
