Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has urged young people to reject political violence and refuse to be used as tools for political interests, warning that no political ambition is worth the loss of a young person’s life.
Nwifuru issued the warning in Abakaliki during the grand finale of the 2026 International Youth Week Celebration organised by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ebonyi State chapter.
Represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Chidi Onyia, the governor described youths as one of Ebonyi’s greatest assets and encouraged them to prepare for leadership and economic opportunities through education, skills development, entrepreneurship, discipline and hard work.
He particularly cautioned youths against political manipulation through social media, propaganda and inflammatory activities. Instead, he urged them to use digital platforms to promote constructive discussions, education and community development.
The governor also called on young people to reduce their dependence on political patronage by acquiring sustainable skills that can help them build independent livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to the economy, governance and public service.
According to him, proper preparation would enable youths to take advantage of opportunities when they arise. He encouraged them to remain focused, resilient and committed to personal development.
Earlier, NYCN Ebonyi State Chairman Douglas Ochishi said the celebration provided an opportunity for young people to reflect on their responsibilities in developing the state.
Ochishi urged Ebonyi youths to reject drug abuse, cultism, cybercrime and political thuggery while embracing education, innovation, entrepreneurship, peace and responsible citizenship.
Other speakers, including the Commissioner for Works, Stanley Mbam, and government officials, also called for continued investment in youth development, education, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship and leadership preparation.The calls come amid growing concerns across Africa over the exploitation of young people in political conflicts, highlighting the need for greater investment in education, employment and responsible civic participation.
