Nigerian Governor Declares Monday Work-Free Day to Boost Voter Turnout for LG Elections
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has declared Monday, August 17, 2026, a work-free day across the state to enable workers to actively participate in the upcoming local government council elections.
The declaration applies to all civil and public servants, including employees at the local government, state, and federal levels within the state, as well as workers in the banking sector. The decision follows the announcement by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) scheduling the local government elections for Monday, August 17.
According to an official statement, the work-free day is designed to provide eligible citizens with the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote and participate in the grassroots democratic process without disruption from official duties. However, workers engaged in essential services are exempted from the declaration.
Governor Mohammed urged citizens and residents to come out peacefully and exercise their franchise in accordance with the law. He also called on eligible voters to conduct themselves responsibly before, during, and after the elections.
The governor assured residents that relevant authorities would work diligently to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral environment. He further appealed to the public to cooperate with security agencies and electoral officials in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Mohammed wished the people of Bauchi State a peaceful and successful local government council election.
