Osimhen provoked : Odemwingie

Former Super Eagles star Osaze Odemwingie has defended Victor Osimhen after the Nigerian striker was involved in a heated confrontation with Villarreal defender Santiago Mourino during Galatasaray’s pre-season friendly.
Galatasaray suffered a 2-1 defeat to Villarreal at RAMS Park last weekend, but the match was also marked by a tense moment involving Osimhen and Mourino.
The incident occurred inside the penalty area when Mourino used his body to prevent Osimhen from moving into a dangerous position. The challenge immediately frustrated the Nigerian forward, who reacted angrily.

Osimhen’s reaction quickly became one of the talking points from the match, particularly because of the striker’s reputation for playing with enormous intensity and determination.
However, Odemwingie believes Osimhen’s response should be understood in the context of what happened on the pitch.

According to the former Super Eagles forward, Mourino’s actions appeared to provoke Osimhen, making his reaction understandable to anyone who has played professional football at the highest level.

“As somebody who has been on the pitch, somebody with experience, I understand that reaction,” Odemwingie said, according to Brila FM.
“Sometimes we get provoked, and especially in friendly games, it annoys more because it’s a friendly game.”
Odemwingie’s comments have shifted attention away from simply blaming Osimhen for losing his temper. Instead, they highlight the physical battles that strikers regularly face when defenders attempt to stop them from reaching dangerous positions.

Osimhen is one of Africa’s most recognised footballers and has built his reputation around his relentless movement, physical strength and willingness to challenge defenders.
Those qualities have also made him one of the most closely marked attackers in European football.

Whenever Osimhen enters the penalty area, defenders know that even a small opening can give him the opportunity to score. As a result, he frequently faces physical challenges while trying to create space.

The confrontation with Mourino therefore appears to have been another example of the intense battles that can take place between attackers and defenders.
Although the game was only a pre-season fixture, Odemwingie pointed out that players can become even more frustrated when they are provoked during friendly matches because such games are supposed to be about preparation rather than unnecessary confrontation.

For Galatasaray, the priority will now be to complete their preparations for the new season and ensure that Osimhen remains focused on his role in attack.
The Nigerian forward is expected to play a major part in Galatasaray’s ambitions, with the club looking to compete strongly on both the domestic and European stages.

The incident also underlines the expectations surrounding Osimhen. As one of the leading African forwards in world football, every confrontation involving him attracts significant attention.
For Nigerian supporters, however, the bigger concern will be what Osimhen produces when competitive football begins.

His goals, performances and fitness will matter far more than a pre-season disagreement.
Odemwingie’s intervention has nevertheless provided a strong defence of the striker, suggesting that Osimhen’s reaction was not simply an unprovoked outburst.

Instead, the former Super Eagles star believes the Nigerian was responding to a moment of provocation during a physical battle inside the box.
With the new season approaching, Osimhen will have the opportunity to turn the attention back to football and remind defenders across Europe why stopping him remains such a difficult task.
