The Nigeria presidency has dismissed as false a viral report alleging that President Bola Tinubu plans to amend the constitution to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria.”
In a statement released on Thursday, presidential media aide Bayo Onanuga also denied claims that the administration intends to abolish Sharia Law in Northern Nigeria.
Onanuga described the report, which relied on unnamed sources, as a deliberate attempt by political actors to create tension and destabilise the country ahead of the general elections.
He said the story was designed to stir political unrest and mislead Nigerians, urging the public to disregard it completely.
According to him, President Tinubu has no intention of presenting any constitutional amendment bill reportedly tagged “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly before the elections.
The presidential spokesman stressed that the administration remains focused on implementing economic reforms and improving the welfare of Nigerians rather than engaging in divisive political agendas.
He also warned citizens to be cautious of fake and inflammatory reports, especially as political campaigns intensify in the lead-up to the January 2026 general elections
