Nigeria has lost one of its prominent intelligence and public service figures, Albert Korubo Horsfall, the former Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), now known as the Department of State Services (DSS), and pioneer Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
Horsfall’s death was announced by his son, Donald Horsfall, in a statement released on Friday, September 11, 2026. The family described his passing as the loss of a “beloved patriarch” whose life was marked by decades of service to Nigeria, Rivers State and the Niger Delta.
According to the family, Horsfall lived a fulfilled and impactful life dedicated to God, his family, his community, Rivers State and Nigeria.
The family paid tribute to him as an illustrious son of the Niger Delta, describing him as a distinguished public servant, statesman and administrator who earned respect through his years of service.
Horsfall was also remembered as one of the founding fathers of Rivers State. His family said he made significant contributions to the development of the state and the country throughout his public service career.
As the pioneer Director-General of the NIA, Horsfall played a significant role in the early development of Nigeria’s external intelligence institution. His service in the country’s security establishment also included leading the State Security Service.
His career placed him among the senior officials who helped shape Nigeria’s security and intelligence institutions during their formative years. His contributions extended beyond his official responsibilities, with the family highlighting his commitment to his community and the wider Niger Delta region.
The family said his legacy would remain significant because of the impact he made through his public service and his commitment to the people and institutions he served.
His death is likely to attract tributes from former colleagues, public officials, security professionals and residents of Rivers State who knew him or were familiar with his contributions to Nigeria’s public service.
The family has not, in its initial announcement, disclosed details about Horsfall’s age, the circumstances surrounding his death or funeral arrangements.
