Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has explained his decision to deploy Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman as a No.9 in the club’s 2-0 victory over Málaga.
Lookman was moved into the central attacking position because Julián Alvarez was unavailable for selection, while Alexander Sorloth was sidelined through injury.
Simeone said the decision was about finding creative solutions and improving Atletico’s attacking options.
“Creativity. We are trying to find ways to enhance our performance because, at this moment, we lack a forward who can contribute from the start,” Simeone said, according to Eldesmarque.
The Argentine coach also indicated that the No.9 position remains an area Atletico are looking to improve.
Lookman’s versatility could give Simeone another attacking option as Atletico navigate the season with different tactical demands.
