The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Abia State, Dr Kelechi Anosike, has alleged that some directors in the state civil service use tricycles, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, to commute to work because of what he described as poor welfare conditions for workers.
Anosike made the allegation while speaking with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
According to the PDP candidate, workers in Abia State are struggling with rising living costs and inadequate welfare under the administration of Governor Alex Otti.
He also alleged that the state government has failed to pay the national minimum wage benchmark of ₦70,000 to all Abia workers, claiming that some workers receive between ₦50,000 and ₦70,000.
Anosike said that, if elected governor in 2027, his administration would prioritise workers’ welfare and introduce a minimum wage of ₦90,000 or more.
He also promised to provide health insurance for workers and improve working conditions across the state civil service.
The PDP candidate further alleged that magistrates and directors in Abia lack official vehicles, contrasting the situation with what he said obtains in some other states.
“Directors go to work in tricycles in Abia. See, director, Level 17,” Anosike said.
He said his proposed policies were aimed at restoring the dignity of Abia workers, improving their welfare and motivating them to be more productive.
Anosike also pledged to reinstate 15,000 workers whom he alleged were sacked under the Otti administration if he wins the 2027 governorship election.Governor Alex Otti, who is seeking to continue in office, is expected to face Anosike and other opposition candidates in the 2027 Abia State governorship election.
