The Enugu State Police Command has launched a zero-tolerance crackdown on traffic violators, ordering the immediate arrest and prosecution of motorists flouting existing regulations across the state.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa issued the directive following what the command described as “rampant disregard” for traffic rules by motorists, which has led to crippling gridlock, free movement disruption, fatal road crashes, loss of lives, and property destruction.
The enforcement aligns with Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu’s nationwide mandate to restore order on Nigerian roads and protect lives and property.
Command spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe revealed on Tuesday that the CP has specifically tasked the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the command’s Legal Officer, and the State Traffic Officer to ensure professional implementation of the directive.
However, in a stern warning to enforcement officers, Giwa cautioned against violating the rights and dignity of motorists and other road users, insisting that all operations must be conducted professionally and within the bounds of the law.
The police chief has also called on all motorists—including police officers and security personnel—to familiarise themselves with traffic regulations and comply strictly to avoid arrest and prosecution.
“Strict compliance with traffic regulations remains essential to reducing congestion, preventing road crashes, and ensuring the free flow of traffic across the State,” the statement read.
The enforcement will cover all existing traffic laws applicable to motorists across Enugu State.
