Clearance operation underway after deadly attack leaves community in mourning, 20 cattle stolen
Benue State Police Command has launched a fierce clearance operation in Efeyi community, Ugboju, Otukpo LGA, following a brutal bandit attack that claimed 13 lives and saw 20 cattle rustled.
Police spokesperson DSP Orchia Aondongu confirmed the death toll in a Wednesday statement, correcting earlier residents’ claims of 15 fatalities.
The attackers stormed the community early Tuesday, targeting cattle belonging to local resident Peter Ambulus. As they fled with the stolen livestock, they opened fire on farmers in the bush, leaving 13 dead.
COMMISSIONER LEADS CHARGE
Commissioner of Police Cletus Nwadiogbu personally led tactical teams in the coordinated response. The operatives came under fire but fought back, neutralizing two suspected bandits and recovering:
· 1 AK-47 rifle
· 15 rounds of ammunition
“We are combing nearby forests and surrounding communities to arrest fleeing suspects and recover stolen cattle,” the command stated.
The operation remains ongoing as authorities vow to bring all perpetrators to justice.
Police condemned the attack and assured residents of intensified security efforts to restore peace in the affected areas.
