Nigel Farage, the firebrand leader of Britain’s anti-immigration movement, dramatically resigned as an MP on Tuesday, forcing a snap by-election that he has cast as a populist showdown against the political elite.
The Clacton representative, under intense scrutiny over his personal finances, threw down the gauntlet to voters in his southeast England constituency, declaring they alone would judge his record.
“I’ve decided that the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions,” Farage said in a televised salvo. “This will be a people versus the establishment by-election.”
The shock move turns the coastal seat into a political battleground, with Farage seeking a fresh mandate as questions swirl over his financial dealings. After two years as Clacton’s MP, the Brexit firebrand is betting that voters will back him over Westminster’s watchdogs.
All eyes now turn to the ballot box and whether Farage’s gambit pays off, or backfires spectacularly.
