Fire Sweeps Through Lagos Settlement, Leaving Residents Homeless as Investigation Begins

A devastating fire swept through a cluster of makeshift homes in Lagos, Nigeria, early Wednesday, destroying properties and forcing many residents to flee with little or no belongings.

The incident occurred on Abudu Street in the Abule Oja area along the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Road in Yaba. Although the blaze caused significant damage to homes and personal possessions, emergency officials confirmed that no deaths or injuries were recorded.

Emergency response teams from several government agencies arrived quickly and worked together to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. Their efforts also helped save an adjoining two-storey building that was at risk of catching fire.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the closely packed arrangement of the temporary structures and the highly combustible materials used in their construction allowed the fire to spread rapidly before it was brought under control.

After extinguishing the main fire, emergency crews carried out cooling operations to eliminate remaining hotspots and reduce the risk of another outbreak. Security personnel also secured the area while officials began assessing the extent of the damage.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the fire. Emergency management officials said specialists from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service are working with other agencies to establish the source of the incident.

Government agencies have also started evaluating the needs of affected residents, with plans to provide humanitarian assistance and relief materials to those who lost their homes and belongings.

Officials urged residents across Lagos and other urban communities to observe basic fire safety measures, including avoiding overloaded electrical sockets, using quality electrical installations, and equipping homes and businesses with fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.

The incident highlights the growing fire risks in densely populated informal settlements across many African cities, where homes are often built close together with flammable materials, allowing fires to spread within minutes. Authorities say continued public awareness and improved safety practices remain essential to preventing similar disasters.
