At least 40 people are feared dead after a passenger boat capsized in the Gorau community, Goronyo LGA, Sokoto state—just a year after a similar tragedy claimed 10 lives in the area.
The incident, which happened Thursday, involved men, women, and children. Rescue efforts are underway, but casualty figures remain unconfirmed as officials scramble to respond. Police spokesperson Ahmed Rufai was unreachable for comment.
This latest disaster adds to a grim pattern: in September 2025, 10 fleeing villagers drowned in Sabon Birni; weeks earlier, another accident there killed five and left 21 rescued. Overloading and lack of life jackets continue to plague Nigeria’s waterways, turning routine trips into deadly gambles.
