A sea of voters flooded the streets of Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, on Saturday morning as residents turned out in large numbers to cast their ballots in the Osun State governorship election—fueling high anticipation in the hometown of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that eager voters arrived at polling units as early as 7 a.m., scanning the posted registers for their names ahead of accreditation. In a show of early preparedness, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials had already set up at several polling centers before 7 a.m., ready to commence the voting process.
Security was visibly bolstered across the town, with unarmed police officers stationed at polling centers, while armed personnel, soldiers, and patrol vehicles were strategically positioned at key locations to ensure order.
Despite the election-day restrictions, vehicular movement was still observed along the busy Ife-Ibadan Road as of 8:20 a.m., with motorcycles and cars navigating the area. The atmosphere remained calm and peaceful, with some shops open for business as residents balanced civic duty with daily routines.
Ikire holds special significance in this election as the hometown of the APC governorship candidate, who is expected to cast his vote at Ward 9, Unit 3, AUD School, Atile, Ikire, later in the day. All eyes remain fixed on the town as the election unfolds, with residents determined to make their voices heard.
