High Court of Justice, Delta State of Nigeria Asaba Criminal Division
Charge No. A/35C/2023
In a landmark ruling, the High Court of Justice, Delta State, presided over by Hon. Justice C. D. Diai, has convicted and sentenced one Samson Eleme, known as “One Eye,” to death by hanging.
The sentencing marks the culmination of a high-profile case prosecuted by Efode Erheriene, Esq, Deputy Director and Zonal Head of the Ogwashi-Uku Zonal Office, Delta State Ministry of Justice.
Eleme was found guilty of violent robbery in Otulu Ogwashi-Uku, during which he inflicted severe injuries on the victim. Samson Eleme was the principal suspect in the brutal attack against the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, his brother Prince Onyema Okonjo, and members of their entourage.
The attack, which caused significant injuries to several community members, included a violent machete assault on Prince Onyema Okonjo, leaving deep scars on the community’s psyche.
Eleme’s violent acts were part of a larger pattern of criminal activity orchestrated by Oduwanor and his associates, destabilizing the region.
A Victory for Justice
Following Eleme’s apprehension, the case was vigorously prosecuted at the Delta State High Court in Asaba, where he faced an eight-count charge for multiple violent offenses.
Justice Diai’s ruling not only delivers justice for the victims but also sends a clear message about the supremacy of the rule of law.
Several associates of Eleme, including Christopher Odiakose (brother of Francis Oduwanor), Leonard Happy (aka Tilome), Ekele Brown, Bright Onitsha, and others, remain at large and are actively being sought by law enforcement for crimes in Otulu Ogwashi-Uku.
Community Gratitude and the Importance of Rule of Law
The Obi of Ogwashi-Uku expressed profound gratitude to the Inspector General of Police and the Ministry of Justice for their diligence and professionalism.
He commended Barrister Efode Erheriene for an outstanding prosecution, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens.
“This conviction underscores the need for adherence to the laws of our country and serves as a deterrent to those who attempt to undermine peace and security,” the Obi stated.
As the search continues for the remaining fleeing members, this ruling provides a measure of relief to the community of Otulu Ogwashi-Uku, which has long been plagued by violence and lawlessness. The case stands as a pivotal moment in restoring order and confidence in the justice system.
