The Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area in Ekiti State, Grace Ogunleye, has been arrested following revelations that she allegedly orchestrated her own abduction.
The Council Chairman, Pius Dada, strongly condemned the incident in a statement, labeling the development as “shocking, disturbing, and entirely unacceptable.”
Mrs. Ogunleye was initially reported kidnapped along the Ipere–Iludun Ekiti road while returning from an official assignment. Her abandoned vehicle was discovered by the roadside with her mobile phone switched off.
At the time, local officials, including the council’s Director of Information, Falade Sunday, confirmed her disappearance, sparking widespread community concern amidst rising regional insecurity.
However, the investigation took a dramatic turn after security agencies uncovered evidence suggesting the abduction was staged.
The arrest follows social media allegations, notably by Facebook user Festus Olanrewaju Ojo, who claimed Mrs. Ogunleye faked the kidnapping to escape political obligations after failing to deliver on financial promises made to a politician.
While formal details of the investigation have not yet been fully released by the police, Chairman Dada emphasized that the local government will not shield anyone from justice.
”No individual is above the law,” Mr. Dada stated. “The law must take its full course without interference, irrespective of status or political position.”
He praised security agencies for their swift and professional handling of the case and urged residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified rumors while the legal process unfolds.
