As political discussions surrounding Nigeria’s 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum, the Kogi State Government has dismissed growing speculation over the next governorship race, insisting that Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is concentrating on governance and strengthening support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Oladele John Nihi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth and Student Matters, said public debate over who succeeds Governor Ododo is premature, stressing that the administration remains committed to delivering on its promises to the people of Kogi State.
According to him, Nigeria’s democracy guarantees every qualified citizen the right to contest for political office, but the governor’s immediate concern is not the 2027 governorship election. Instead, he said the administration is focused on improving governance while working to ensure strong electoral support for President Tinubu and APC candidates in future elections across Kogi State.
Nihi explained that Governor Ododo’s administration is prioritising development initiatives that directly impact residents, including investments in infrastructure, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, agriculture and security.
He urged APC members, political stakeholders and supporters to avoid distractions from early political campaigns, emphasizing that the government’s attention remains on delivering tangible results rather than engaging in succession politics.
The statement comes amid increasing political conversations across Nigeria as parties and interest groups begin positioning themselves ahead of the next election cycle. However, the Kogi Government maintains that governance remains its primary responsibility, with electoral politics taking a back seat until the appropriate time.
