A massive explosion at a tank farm in Apapa, Lagos, has prompted a coordinated emergency response by Nigerian authorities, raising concerns over safety at one of West Africa’s most important energy and maritime gateways.
The explosion occurred at the Bono Energy Terminal in the Apapa industrial area, sending thick smoke into the sky and prompting emergency services to move swiftly to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring fuel storage facilities.
Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were immediately deployed to the scene, while the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and other emergency agencies coordinated efforts to contain the incident and protect critical infrastructure around the port.
Officials said the priority was to bring the fire under control and prevent disruptions to operations at the Apapa port complex, Nigeria’s busiest seaport and a strategic gateway for trade and petroleum distribution across West Africa.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the explosion, and no official casualty figures had been released at the time of this report. Investigations are expected to begin once emergency responders fully secure the area.
The incident has renewed scrutiny of safety standards at petroleum storage facilities in Nigeria, where the protection of critical energy infrastructure remains essential to regional trade, economic stability, and maritime operations.
