Lionel Messi delivered another memorable performance by scoring twice as Inter Miami defeated Mexico’s Atletico San Luis 4-2 in their opening Leagues Cup group-stage match on Wednesday.
The Argentine superstar made history by becoming the all-time leading scorer in Leagues Cup history, taking his tally to 14 goals in the tournament involving Major League Soccer (MLS) and Mexico’s Liga MX clubs.
Atletico San Luis struck first through David Rodriguez in the fourth minute, but Messi responded with an equaliser just seven minutes later. Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia then gave Inter Miami the lead before Messi added his second goal just before half-time.
Brazilian defender Micael extended Miami’s advantage deep into first-half stoppage time, while Rafa Llorente scored a late consolation for the Mexican side.
The victory gives Inter Miami a strong start to the 2026 Leagues Cup campaign, with Messi once again proving decisive as the club pursues another tournament title after winning the competition in 2023.
Elsewhere in the Leagues Cup, FC Dallas defeated Queretaro 2-0, while Club Leon secured a 1-0 away victory over Nashville.
