NAFDAC Seals 3 Factories for Defying Sachet Alcohol Ban

NAFDAC shuts three Ogun plants as manufacturers caught secretly producing banned sachet drinks—with packaging dated July 2026.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed three alcohol manufacturing companies in Ota, Ogun State, for violating the federal ban on alcoholic beverages in sachets and miniature PET bottles.

The enforcement, led by Kunle Ojo, Assistant Director of Investigation and Enforcement, uncovered widespread defiance—including secret product removals, broken government seals, and resumed production after shutdowns.

Key violations uncovered:

· Factory 1: Found actively producing sachet alcohol and stockpiling PET bottles. After being placed on hold, officials discovered the products were secretly removed from the premises.
· Factory 2: Caught red-handed continuing production of banned sachet drinks. Premises immediately sealed.
· Factory 3: Broke NAFDAC seals on 22 production machines sealed since January—and resumed operations. Millions of PET bottles and packaging materials were confiscated for destruction.

The ban, enforced since January 2024, targets alcohol in containers under 200ml to curb underage drinking and protect public health. NAFDAC Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye emphasized the policy is driven by health concerns, not punishment.

In a related development, Adeyeye revealed that recent enforcement operations uncovered packaging materials with production dates as recent as July 2026—proving manufacturers are still producing despite the ban. Some operators have also relocated equipment to unregistered facilities and removed company signboards to evade detection.

NAFDAC has vowed zero tolerance for regulatory evasion and urged the public to report illegal sales or production of banned sachet alcoholic beverages to the nearest NAFDAC office.
