Nigerian students rejoice as long-awaited monthly stipends begin rolling out in batches

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has officially commenced payment of June and July upkeep allowances to student beneficiaries nationwide bringing relief to thousands who had endured weeks of anxious waiting.

The development was confirmed by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), with excited beneficiaries flooding X (formerly Twitter) to share screenshots of successful credit alerts.

“No Student Will Be Left Behind” — NANS President

In a statement released Friday, NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, announced the disbursement had begun, assuring students that all outstanding backlogs would be cleared.

“The payment of June and July NELFUND upkeep allowances has officially commenced. As I assured you, every outstanding backlog will be paid. We remain committed to ensuring that no eligible Nigerian student is left behind.”

Akinteye urged beneficiaries yet to receive their allowances not to panic, explaining that payments are being processed in batches to ensure smooth delivery.

“We are here for you, always, and we will continue to stand firmly in defence of the welfare and interests of Nigerian students. Aluta Continua!” he added.

Students Celebrate as Stipends Arrive

The announcement follows weeks of growing frustration among students over delayed monthly upkeep payments under the Federal Government’s student loan scheme. However, the tide turned swiftly as beneficiaries began posting proof of payment across social media platforms.

The upkeep allowance is a vital component of the NELFUND student loan programme, providing monthly financial support to eligible tertiary institution students—in addition to tuition fees paid directly to their schools.
