Nigerian music star Portable apologises after controversial boxing walkout against actor Charles Okocha
Nigerian street-pop artist Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has apologised after walking out of a high-profile celebrity boxing rematch against Nollywood actor Charles Okocha, a decision that resulted in his disqualification and handed victory to his opponent.
The much-publicised contest ended in controversy when Portable left the ring after the opening round. Although he later returned, officials ruled that he had abandoned the fight and declared Okocha the winner.
In a statement issued through his management, Zeh Nation/Dr Zeh, the singer expressed regret over the incident and apologised to the organisers, fans, supporters and everyone affected by the dramatic ending.
The management acknowledged that the outcome disappointed many spectators, accepted responsibility for the controversy and thanked Balmoral Group for organising the event. It also pledged that lessons had been learned and promised a stronger and more disciplined performance in future appearances.
Before the apology was released, Portable claimed he walked away because Charles Okocha bit and choked him during the contest, insisting the bout had turned into a wrestling match rather than a boxing contest.
The incident has since sparked intense debate across social media, with fans expressing mixed reactions over the singer’s decision and the officials’ ruling.
