The wife of Nigeria’s President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, through her Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), on Tuesday provided cash support to 250 elderly persons in Delta state.
Senator Tinubu stated that the initiative is an annual programme aimed at improving the welfare of elderly citizens across the country. The event was held at Delta government house Asaba.
Represented by Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, wife of Delta state governor, Senator Tinubu said the scheme targets 250 elderly citizens aged 65 and above across all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).
She further announced that the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Governing Board has increased the annual grant from N100,000 to N200,000 this year, underscoring the administration’s commitment to supporting elderly citizens, especially during the festive season.
She said: “A total of One Billion, Nine Hundred Milion Naira (N1,900,000,000) will be disbursed across the nation.
“N200,000 will be distributed to each beneficiary. In addition to this, free medical check-ups and other sundry items will be provided.
“I congratulate all our senior citizens who have been selected as beneficiaries. I urge you to remember to prioritise your health even as we all enjoy and celebrate in the festive season.
“Eat well, stay hydrated, do little exercise – like walking and getting adequate rest. Spend quality time with loved ones, and do what you enjoy and makes you happy.
On her part, Mrs. Oborevwori who was represented by Mrs. Catherine Onyeme, wife of the deputy governor of Delta state, said President Tinubu’s wife is passionate about the well being of Nigerians.
The governor’s wife said old age is worth celebrating, noting that though old age begins at 65, life has not been easy for many, considering the economic challenges bedevilling the country.
In addition to the N200,000 the president’s wife disbursed to the senior citizens, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori donated 50kg bag of rice to each of the 250 elders to celebrate the Christmas and the New Year.
