Senator Ned Nwoko’s appointment as chairman of Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation: A Square Peg in a Square Hole

One hallmark of visionary leaders is their decisiveness, even when faced with numerous options. Senator Ned Munir Nwoko of Delta North senatorial district exemplifies this quality, knowing precisely what he wants and never settling for less. If the available options don’t meet his standards, he will forge a new path and push forward relentlessly. His determination and clear focus on achieving developmental goals set him apart.

Senator Nwoko’s appointment as chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation stands out as a preeminent selection among the Senate Committee leadership, without detracting from other appointments. Prior to this role, he was presented with leadership opportunities in various committees, which he graciously declined. At that juncture, the Committee on Reparations and Repatriation was not yet constituted. Instead, he opted to serve as vice-chairman of the Sports and Environment committees—domains to which he is profoundly committed. Additionally, he strategically chose to be a member of 15 other committees that have a direct impact on his constituency.

One year after the 10th Senate’s committee leadership appointments, Senator Ned Nwoko was designated Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation—a domain in which he is profoundly vocal. The prescient legislator has been at the vanguard of legislative initiatives to secure reparations for historical injustices and the need to combat neocolonialism in Nigeria and other African nations. His missive to the British Prime Minister, demanding an official apology and reparations for the egregious mistreatment during slavery and the exploitation of African resources by the British government, exemplifies his resolute commitment to confronting these issues with unwavering determination. The Distinguished Senator’s focus on reparations extends beyond international arenas to domestic concerns. He continues to pursue compensation from the Nigerian government for the grievous 1967 Asaba Massacre.

On the international stage, Senator Nwoko has unequivocally demonstrated his aptitude to chair this committee with exceptional finesse. His resilience and perseverance were evidenced by his pivotal role in securing the Paris Club loan refunds, a crucial maneuver that significantly contributed to stabilizing Nigeria’s economy. He orchestrated and completed this process with remarkable efficacy. The indefatigable legislator garnered global recognition for his landmark litigation against several banks in the UK, Paris, and Geneva on behalf of Nigerian states indebted to the Paris and London Club lenders. His investigation into the multinational creditors unveiled discrepancies in loan repayments. He authored the reports that led to the cessation of monthly deductions from states’ allocations and the initiation of refunds. Additionally, he spearheaded discussions with the Nigerian government to reconcile and verify the nation’s foreign loans, culminating in Nigeria’s exit from external debt obligations.

A man who has navigated such intense international scrutiny and emerged triumphant is eminently positioned to spearhead efforts for reparations and repatriation. His legislative endeavors in this domain are both explicit and resolute. Senator Ned Nwoko’s agenda includes motions such as “Need to Demand Reparations for Historical Injustices and Mitigation of Neocolonialism in Nigeria and African Nations” and “Need for Redress, Healing, and Reconciliation for the Heinous 1967 Asaba Massacre.” In the realm of addressing historical injustices and advocating for reparations, Senator Nwoko is making indelible contributions, akin to the pioneering pan-Africanist Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and stalwart advocate Moshood Abiola of Nigeria—distinguished figures in the protracted struggle for reparations and repatriation.

It is incontrovertible that Senator Ned Nwoko’s appointment as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation is a paradigm of fittingness. He is unequivocally the most suitable candidate for this role. With an extensive background in law, politics, and international affairs, Senator Nwoko is the quintessential choice for this position. To add, his academic credentials are formidable: he holds degrees in Law and History from Keele University and a Master’s in Maritime and Commercial Law from King’s College London. He was called to the English Bar and has served as Secretary-General of Nigerian Legal Practitioners in the UK. Additionally, the distinguished lawmaker is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.
