President Bola Tinubu has fired a blunt warning to state governors: quit wasting funds on unnecessary flyovers and start delivering real change for Nigerians.
Speaking Thursday in Abuja during a visit from Oyo State traditional rulers led by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Tinubu didn’t hold back. He argued that with state allocations now four to five times higher than during his own tenure as Lagos governor, there’s no excuse for frivolous spending.
“Stop building flyovers where there’s no numerical traffic,” Tinubu said, turning directly to Ladoja—a former governor himself. “Build roads and artery networks that truly improve lives and give security agencies easy access to communities.”
The President stressed that governors are no longer borrowing to pay salaries or pensions, thanks to increased federal revenue. So, he asked: why aren’t they doing more?
Tinubu also used the platform to push for state police, urging traditional rulers to step up in the fight against insecurity. He revealed that forest guards are being empowered to tackle criminal hotspots, but insisted grassroots collaboration is key.
His message? More substance, less showboating.
