France captain Kylian Mbappe has admitted Spain deserved their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final after exposing the tactical and technical flaws that brought Les Bleus’ title challenge to a painful end.
The 2-0 defeat in the semi-final ended France’s hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final, with Spain dominating possession, controlling the midfield and dictating the pace of one of the tournament’s biggest matches.
Speaking after the game, Mbappe acknowledged that France failed to execute their strategy and struggled to cope with Spain’s disciplined style of play.
“We didn’t play the game we wanted,” Mbappe said. “Technically and tactically, we were below our level. Spain controlled the game better than us, and we couldn’t stop them.”
The French captain admitted that Rodri and Fabián Ruiz were allowed too much freedom in midfield, while France’s pressing system repeatedly failed, enabling Spain to dictate the contest from start to finish.
Spain opened the scoring through Mikel Oyarzabal from the penalty spot before Pedro Porro sealed victory with a second goal, leaving France unable to mount a meaningful comeback.
Mbappe also accepted that France repeatedly gave away possession at crucial moments, making it almost impossible to break Spain’s rhythm.
France coach Didier Deschamps introduced fresh players after the break, but the changes failed to reverse the outcome as Spain comfortably secured their place in Sunday’s World Cup final.
Young midfielder Rayan Cherki admitted France were second best throughout the encounter, saying Spain showed greater hunger, quality and composure on the biggest stage.
Despite his visible frustration during the closing stages, Mbappe accepted full responsibility as captain and promised France would return stronger.
“As captain, I take responsibility,” he said. “We wanted to reach the final, but we didn’t do enough to earn it.”
France will now compete in the third-place play-off, while Spain move one step closer to lifting the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy after producing one of the tournament’s most commanding performances.
