Senior Special Assistant to Delta state governor on informal sector management, Chief Ifeanyi Abanum, has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori over his recent support to artisans and farmers in the state.
He made the commendation while responding to questions from journalists during a clean up exercise at the mechanic village in Asaba the state capital.
Abanum, who is also chairman of artisans association in Delta state, said recently the governor released money to support farmers and artisans in the state. Besides money, the governor through D-CARES, released fertilizers for farmers across the state.
The SSA who said artisans in the state will continue to work with the governor for the good of the state, said the state government has done well for the mechanics who are very appreciative of the governor’s good gestures.
He told journalists that the only challenge in the mechanic village is drainage and secretariat hall for the union activities.
He revealed that the drainage and union secretariat were part of agreements reached with the contractor who developed the mechanic village, hence he urged the developer to fulfill all the agreement he entered with the state government at the signing of agreement.
He said part of the agreement with the government was to build the mechanic village, supply electricity and provide a union hall for them.
He explained that the clean up exercise they embarked on was a way of keying into the clean environmental program of the state government.
According to him, the clean up exercise is necessary because people of all kinds visit the mechanic village to do all kinds of business, hence the environment must be inviting for them.
“If you check well, so many outsiders come into this place to do business. Some come to repair cars, others come to buy motor spare parts. We keep the environment clean with the directive of the state government,” Abanum said.
Mr. Oputa Nnamdi, vice chairman Zone B at the mechanic village, said the cleaning exercise was embarked on as part of strategies to keep away diseases and maintain good health.
He said: “This is where we spend most of our time. So, we need to keep it clean so that we operate in a clean and safe environment. There’s a general saying that health is wealth. When we are healthy we will not be spending money on treatment of illness.”
Speaking along with Nnamdi, Mr. Macdonald Okechukwu, added that the clean up exercise was a general sanitation exercise which all the spare parts dealers, motor mechanics and others who do business there carry out on a monthly basis.
