Court Slams N20m Fine on Self-Styled ‘Jesus’ Who Preached Money Rituals
The supernatural empire of Onyebuchi Okocha, better known as “Onyeze Jesus,” came crashing down Friday as an Anambra State High Court handed him a six-year prison sentence and a N20 million fine for misleading the public with claims of magical wealth creation.
The self-proclaimed native doctor, who built a massive social media following by promising instant riches through spiritual means, wept openly in court as Justice Jude Obiora delivered the landmark judgment under the state’s Homeland Security Law.
The Verdict
After his arrest in February 2025, Okocha faced three serious charges:
· Promoting wealth through supernatural means
· Preparing charms for criminals
· Engaging in “Oke-Ite” rituals and money-doubling schemes
The court found him guilty on count one – misleading the public by claiming supernatural powers to make people wealthy through unlawful spiritual practices.
However, Justice Obiora discharged him on the remaining two counts, stating the prosecution failed to provide evidence or witnesses to prove allegations of ritual killings and money-doubling.
Tears in Court
Before sentencing, the convicted native doctor pleaded for mercy:
“My Lord, please temper justice with mercy because this is my first offence… Since February last year when I was arrested, I do not know the whereabouts of my wife and my twin children who depend on me as the breadwinner. Three widows who depended on me have all died due to the fact that there is no one taking care of them.”
Court’s Strong Message
Justice Obiora made it clear that such practices would not be tolerated:
“Individuals who claim supernatural powers capable of making people wealthy through prohibited practices… are liable to imprisonment and financial penalties.”
What’s Next?
Okocha’s lawyer, Bath Ezedinobi, confirmed the defense will study the Certified True Copy of the judgment before deciding on an appeal.
State Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, hailed the judgment as “a strong affirmation of the state’s Homeland Security Law” that will “serve as a deterrent to others.”
